Frequently Asked Questions

What is an apostille and when is it needed?

An apostille is a certificate that verifies the authenticity of a public official’s signature and seal on a document for use in countries that are part of the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention (over 120 countries).
If your destination country is not part of the Convention, you’ll need embassy or consulate legalization instead.

Do I need to submit the original document or a notarized copy?

Most documents — especially vital records and transcripts — must be originals. Some states accept notarized copies, depending on the document type. We’ll confirm what's needed during your free document review.

How long does the apostille process take?

It depends on the location and document type. See our turnaround options:

Same-Day – Available in DC and MD (schedule before cutoff time)
Expedited – 1–2 business days
Standard – 3–8 business days
Federal documents – 9 business days (expedited) or 3 weeks (standard)

Can I mail or send the documents for apostille?

Yes — in many cases, you can.

If you're submitting vital records (birth, marriage, death certificates), you do not need to be present — these can be mailed or picked up.

However, if your document requires notarization, you must appear in person or sign online in front of a notary with valid ID.We offer secure local pickup, mail-in options, and express return shipping — domestic and international.

Do federal documents require special processing?

Yes.
Federal documents like FBI background checks or IRS forms must go through the U.S. Department of State. They usually take 9 business days for expedited service or 3 weeks for standard processing.

What if my documents require embassy legalization?

If your destination country doesn’t accept apostilles, we offer full embassy or consulate legalization services. We’ll review your document and let you know the exact steps required.

Can I add certified translation to my document?

Absolutely. Just write “Add Certified Translation” in the message section of your form. We’ll review your document and send you a quote.

What if my document was not notarized properly?

We’ll catch that during the free review. If your notarization is incorrect or missing, we’ll guide you on how to fix it to avoid delays or rejection.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept credit cards, Zelle, Apple Pay, Google Pay, cash, checks, and other secure online payment options. Final pricing is provided after we review your documents.

What Is an Apostille?

An apostille is an international certification that makes your U.S. document legally valid in countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention. It confirms that your document is authentic and ready for use abroad — whether for personal, legal, academic, or business purposes.

  • This service is amazing! I wish I had known about it sooner. I had a document to be used abroad that needed to be notarized AND needed an apostille. It’s not so hard to find a notary but for anything more complicated, Aziz can get it done with a minimum of effort on the client’s part. He picked up the document, handled the legalizations process and returned the document to me. And in less than 24 hours! The consulate, which was my only other option had a ridiculous wait time to even get an appointment,  not to mention they were going to charge me three times what Aziz did. His rates are reasonable and he is super-professional and efficient! He saved me so much time and navigated the whole process seamlessly for me.  I highly recommend him and will no doubt be calling on him again in the future.

  • I was impressed with this company from start to finish, and I will definitely go to them again when I need a notary.First, it was super easy to set up the three appointments that I needed; the receptionist was able to confirm the appointments while I was on the phone with her.  Second, the notary showed up right on time for all appointments, even in one city location during rush hour and where finding street parking was challenging.  Even when I needed to change the location of one appointment at the last minute (from a Starbucks that wasn't open yet to a nearby restaurant), it was easy to reach the notary himself and work out the change with him.  Third, the two notaries I dealt with were both professional in appearance and manner.  Finally, company can cover DC, MD, and VA where I do business, and their price is reasonable.I'm very grateful that the paperwork went smoothly and was done properly.  I'm a new fan of DC Mobile Notary.

  • Aziz of DC MOBILE Notary was incredibly patient, knowledgeable, friendly, and reliable with regard to services we needed to authenticate educational documents for use abroad.  I will no hesitate to utilize his services again. In today's world of everything automated and voice bots, Aziz was a breath of fresh air, answers calls and emails without delays and works on finding solutions for his clients. Thanks Aziz.
